What Cycling Taught Me About PE

This past year, it’s been my favorite form of cardio.
A gear-related tweak made all the difference—and taught me an important lesson that applies to PE.
The Painful Start
I needed low-impact cardio to improve my fitness.
So, I did what most beginners do, spent an afternoon googling which led me into a sporting goods store. 30 minutes later my wallet was $500 lighter, and I had a bike the salesman swore was perfect for me.
It wasn’t.
The next few months were a nightmare.
Hands going numb, pain and chafing places you don’t want it…
I was spending more time tinkering with the bike than training.
And my fitness wasn’t improving…
The Sorcerer of Cyclery
A cyclist friend listened to my complaints and said, “Bike doesn’t fit you, go see my fitter.”
It sounded gimmicky, but I was desperate.
After paying this sorcerer of cyclery a few hundred dollars he spent an afternoon with me:
- Measuring every limb and my range of motion in each joint.
- Mounted me on a laser tracked machine that didn’t even resemble a bike and began tweaking.
- Showed me a 3d model of my optimal bike geometry (and how far off my current bike was).
- Rolled out a new bike, made some quick adjustments and told me to come back in an hour.
That hour was my first pain-free and grin-inducing ride of my life.
No hot spots. No chafing. No numb hands.
I had never ridden that fast and hills never felt so easy.
Now I ride 5-6 days a week, pain-free and have seen incredible improvements in my fitness.

The wrong tools will hold you back, creating massive frustration.

Most PE newcomers repeat my first bike mistake:
- Do some quick “research” on the internet.
- Buy the first thing an influencer tells them they need.
